Color Harmony: The Ping Pong Edition

 basement
We recently helped our clients use color harmony to transform their neutral-hued basement into a colorful ‘arena’ and gathering place.  The family are great fans of ping pong tournaments played between father and son.  Unfortunately, the ping pong balls would get lost in play.  The cream-colored walls perfectly camouflaged the balls as they sailed through the air.  This could not stand, so we needed to figure out a way to incorporate color tastefully and playfully in this great, fun space.

The family chose three, vibrant colors.  We were pleasantly surprised by the choices, and the combination was perfect.  One color, a neutral, warm, light brown was painted on the center column walls around the fireplace.  20160412_152352This particular brown is similar to the color of the fireplace stone so it helps minimize the visual impact of the structure.  We painted two of the surrounding walls in a medium-toned spring yellow-green.  We then painted the other two opposing walls with a green-tinted medium blue.  The colors work splendidly together.  The green undertones of both the yellow-green and the blue harmonize beautifully.  Alternating the wall colors makes the room fun and playful-just like the family.  The neutral center color anchors the large space, and adds sophistication and simplicity to the room while blending with the fireplace beautifully.

Now the room genuinely reflects the way it’s used – as a fun, inviting place for a playful and happy family.  Most importantly, there are no more lost ping pong balls.  We loved making the family’s vision a reality.
