Plant Your Own Color

At the Larkin Painting Company, we often speak of care of the soul through care of your home and environment.  As a painting company, we help you focus on the environment inside of your home.  However, you know from reading this blog that I find inspiration, beauty and color everywhere.  Color and beauty can be found inside your home as well as outside.  Your home’s outside environment provides inspiration for decorating and caring for the inside of your home and vice versa.

Now that you are thinking about beautifying the outside of your home, what will you do?  If you happen to have a space for a tree or two, consider planting fruit trees.  They add beauty, color and form all year ’round.  Take the cherry tree for instance.  In early Spring, it provides gorgeous blossoms.  Later in the season, the bright reds and pinks of the cherries literally pop against the tree’s green background of leaves.  You can collect the cherries for snacks and indulgent baked desserts or leave them so the birds have an extra boost to their diet.  During the Summer, the tree provides shade and deep green color.  Come Fall, the leaves change to different shades of luxurious yellow.  While the Winter winds and snow blow, the cherry tree’s bare branches create striking sculptures.  If the cherry tree is not exactly what you prefer, there are plenty other fruit-bearing trees that can do well in our growing zone.  Plum trees, peach or apple trees provide beauty and color for your outside environment also.

It is best to plant the trees in the fall, before frost and while the trees are dormant.  Fall planting gives the tree time and space to concentrate on root production without competing with the need to form leaves.  So now you have all summer to plan and plot where you are going to plant your color.
