Happy Fourth of July!

Happy Birthday to the U.S.A.!  I know it’s raining here and there, and the fireworks have been postponed, but I hope you have a wonderful holiday!  Just in case the party hasn’t started at your place or if you did manage to ferret out a dry spot on the beach, I found a few good reads to help you celebrate the holiday.

1.  Team of Rivals – This is a great book about President Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin

2.  1776– Love this one by David McCullough

3.  John Adams– The man was a genius.  This one is also by David McCullough

4.  The Adams-Jefferson Letters–  A very interesting read by Lester J. Cappon

5. Eyes on the Prize– A book about the civil rights years by Juan Williams

6. A People’s History of the American Revolution: How Common People Shaped the Fight for Independence– This book explores a side of the revolution that is not often talked about.  It’s by Ray Raphael.

7.  Benjamin Franklin-The man was a diplomat, scientist and statesman, and then some.  This is by Edmund S. Morgan

8.  The Stamp Act Crisis: Prologue to Revolution:  So how did the Revolution actually start?  This book examines the Stamp Act and Boston.  The author is Edmund S. Morgan

9.  Crispus Attucks:  Hero of the Boston Massacre by Anne Beier.  This book introduces Crispis Attucks, former slave and first to die in the Boston Massacre.

10. Rebecca Dickinson: Independence for a New England Woman by Marla Miller.  This book includes excerpts from Dickinson’s journal which gives context to the lives of some women before and during the American Revolution.
