A Room is Not Just a Room

Your home is made up of many rooms-kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room, but a room is not just a room.  The poet, Richard Blanco, in his book: Looking for the Gulf Motel, wrote a poem entitled El Florida Room.  This poem perfectly describes the approach, attitude, and awareness that we bring to painting our customers’ rooms.

Blanco describes a room in his mother’s home:

Not a study or a den, but El Florida as my mother called it, a pretty name for the room with the prettiest view of the lipstick – red hibiscus puckered up against the windows…

Not a sunroom, but where the sun both rose and set, all day the shadows of banana trees fan – dancing across the floor, and if it rained, rained the loudest, like marbles plucking across the roof under constant threat of coconuts ready to fall from the sky…

Not a TV room, but where I watched Creature Feature as a boy, clinging to my brother, safe from vampires in the same sofa where I have fell in love with Clint Eastwood and my grandfather watching westerns…

Not a family room, but the room where my father twirled his hair while listening to eight-tracks of Elvis, read Nietzsche and Kant a few months before he died, where my mother learned to dance alone as she swept…

We at Larkin Painting understand that to you a room in your home is not just a room, but a place where you fall in love, observe nature’s rhythms, read your child her favorite story over and over again, and make lasting memories.  The rooms are not just rooms.  We respect/honor the connection you have to the rooms that not only create your home, but your life.

Be well,

Bill
