Repair Water-Stained Walls

We repair water-stained walls. Many of our clients ask that we get rid of these unsightly brown water stains. Stains ruin the look and feel of a home even though the wall itself is sound and sturdy. In these cases, the water, mold or mildew has not damaged the drywall enough to require replacement. Our hands and eyes are terrific tools for our expert wall repair technique.

Examination of the Surface

First, we examine the drywall with our hands to spot any sign of water damage. We inspect the entire surface to check the wall for dampness and softness. If we detect softness or weakness in the wall, we remove the wall and begin a more extensive repair. When we detect only dampness, we use another repair method without removing the drywall. We then look at the wall for signs of mold or mildew. If either is present, we wipe the surface well with a diluted mixture of water and chlorine bleach to remove the mold or mildew. We inspect the wall again to ensure that we have cleaned all traces of mold.

Drying and Painting the Repaired Wall Surface

Next, we dry the water-damaged area completely. In many cases, we train a heater or fan on the damp area which speeds the drying process.
After the drywall is completely dry, we paint over the area with a thin coat of oil or alcohol-based primer using a brush or roller. We then feather the edges into the undamaged areas with a near-dry brush to avoid leaving raised areas on the undamaged paint. We let this first coat dry and then brush on another coat. Now it is time to apply a finish coat of paint . This paint must match the undamaged section of the wall perfectly. Sometimes we find that the old paint has faded a bit and doesn’t match the new paint coming freshly out of the can. If necessary, we sometimes repaint the entire wall or ceiling to ensure the new coat matches the old paint and the damaged area blends smoothly.
