Behr’s 2021 Color of the Year

Behr’s 2021 Color of the Year is finally here! It is our annual tradition to explore the colors of the year from the various paint companies and manufacturers. Behr just recently announced their featured color. Like so many paint companies, Behr is focusing on a color that provides comfort and grounding during this second year of turmoil. Many people are feeling rootless – as if they are spinning. At the Larkin Painting Company, we firmly believe that color creates mood and atmosphere. It affects how you feel and how you process the day’s events.

Behr, of course, is also aware of the effect of color on our lives. It chose Canyon Dusk for its 2021 featured color. It is a light hue of terra cotta, beautifully grounding and familiar. The color reminds us of the Italian terra cotta pottery. Terra cotta is a reddish-hued clay from the Tuscany region of Italy. The color evokes the earthy beauty and calm of the pots used in homes and greenhouses, which themselves provide a feeling of warmth, life, and comfort.

We are spending more time at home than ever before. Even with the welcome news of vaccines and the prospect of “opening up”, the home will still be a place of refuge. The trend for making our homes cozy retreats will continue. Canyon Dusk is a part of Behr’s color palette that focuses on the theme of “elevated comfort”. Companion colors such as warm whites and grays make this color pop.

Desert twilight inspired this hue. Dusk, the moment just after the sunset, is reassuring. According to Erika Woelfel, the Behr vice president of color and creative services. She states, “there is something so reassuring about dusk, the moment just after sunset, which brings the promise of a new day. The illuminating, free-spirited Canyon Dusk is a color that can be found in a variety of places, from an awe-inspiring desert landscape to the color of sunbaked clay.”

Canyon Dusk is a rich hue and it’s perfect for an accent wall or architectural focal points like a fireplace. It will work beautifully for your bathroom. You can add green tropical plants for a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere-a perfect oasis free from the stress of the world. Canyon Dusk is also versatile enough to be used for exterior projects. This pinkish-orange color is perfect for front doors and sheds.
