Going High for Our Client: Serving Where Others Can’t
Before Laurel became our client, she could not get her church painted. Laurel is the on the Operations Council for the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton (FUUSN). It is her responsibility to provide for the maintenance of the church buildings that feature much historic woodwork. We have been serving her and the FUUSN for about three years now. However, Laurel had to deal with a lot of contractor problems before she hired us.
Founded in 1848, the FUUSN remains an important pillar of its Newton, Massachusetts community. The organization is active and supports social justice initiatives such as Black Lives Matter, LGTBQIA+ initiatives, Green Action, and service projects such as Do One Thing. It is important to Laurel, the FUUSN, and the community that the physical building be safe, reflect its importance to the people of Newton, and provide a space that is peaceful and provides support. 
In addition, the church is an antique and features historic woodwork and plasterwork. Consequently, a contractor must approach projects on this site with great expertise, commitment, and care. Because its an older structure, Laurel needs to have a paint contractor who can frequently and consistently attend to the specialized maintenance of the church. Otherwise, the work needed gets out of hand and damage creeps up on the church.
Prior to entrusting us with the church, Laurel tried hiring other paint contractors. However, they were repeatedly and completely unreliable. Some would not show up after surveying the amount of work needed and giving her bid. Others would not even show up to bid on the work. After dealing with disappointing contractor experiences, Laurel put her trust and the trust of the FUUSN community in us. She had a mission to care for the church and make sure that it lasts for future generations. When she contacted us, she explained the difficulties of finding a reliable contractor to take care of the church and what she needed us to do. We got started and never looked back. Now, Laurel routinely calls on us to take care of this historical and community gem.
In years past, Laurel has asked us to repair heavily damaged plasterwork among other necessary tasks. We have continued to be responsive to her needs and requests. We communicate clearly with her so that we can help her stay on top of the church’s demanding maintenance requirements. Her community trusts her to ensure the care of this space so that their work and support of the community can continue safely with little to no interruption. We are honored to help her achieve this monumental task.
The most recent project was a repaint of the very high Parish Hall walls. If she were unable to get this work done quickly, the church’s demanding maintenance schedule would have been compromised. Laurel cannot afford delays in any maintenance work. As usual, we jumped on the project to ensure that she met her schedule and fulfilled the expectations the community has for her. The walls are repainted and Laurel was able to cross another big maintenance to-do off of her list and on schedule.
