Captiva Home

At the Larkin Painting Company, we enjoy working with other craftspeople and learning about their areas of expertise. Have you seen gorgeously updated furniture on Instagram? There is a good chance the piece you saw was created by Captiva Home Decor. If you have ever wished you could have such a piece like for your home, Kelly Jenkins of Captiva Home can tell you how she creates these showstoppers. She is quite busy, but we recently had the opportunity speak with her about her company and her craft.
LPC: Good morning Kelly. Can you tell our readers about your business and what services you provide?
KJ: Certainly. Captiva Home is a premium furniture painting company offering high quality products and services. We specialize in taking outdated or well- loved furniture and updating it with a whole new look to allow you to enjoy it for many years to come. Captiva Home is known for a professional approach, attention to detail and gorgeous designs. Though our business is officially two years old, Daniel and I have been training, building skills in painting and carpentry since 1999. We are honored and excited to be building a successful business by following our passions.
LPC: How do you approach a furniture renewal or updating project? If a potential client wants to update a piece of her furniture or purchase a “new” piece, how does she get started?
KJ: We try to make the process easy for our clients. Captiva Home offers finished pieces for sale, custom furniture painting (of pieces you already own) and the opportunity to choose a piece from our unfinished inventory and have it painted to fit your lifestyle. To begin simply send us a few photos of your piece, measurements and any ideas you have for updating it (inspiration photos are ideal- for example, my idea of a “distressed” finish may be VERY different than yours!). We’ll respond with a base quote, timeline and continue the conversation from there! We’re typically booked out a few months in advance and can hold your spot on the calendar with a deposit.

LPC: What is the most rewarding project you have completed?

KJ: The most rewarding piece we’ve ever updated (or “transformed”, “refinishing” usually refers to stripping and staining a piece) has to be this Smoky Pearl Hutch. I love rescuing undesirable furniture and transforming them into incredible statement pieces and this one was DRAMATIC! We first saw this piece at an estate sale and found the curved panels to be unique, but [we] couldn’t justify the purchase. A few weeks later they contacted us; the piece was heading for the dumpster and they wondered if we still had any interest, we took the chance and brought it back to the workshop, where it sat large and obtrusively for the next six months. We nearly trashed it three times until an interior designer contacted us looking for a large hutch. I sent along the glossy, terrible before picture below and held my breath. Thankfully she was able to see the potential in the ugly duckling and chose a finish to complement the piece’s abundant character. We knew this was going to be a special piece, but [we] weren’t prepared for the overwhelming response. Not only did the client and designer love it (most importantly!), but our online following went crazy for the new finish! It was extremely well received across Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest and remains our most popular piece ever! Just check out the Before & After photo!

LPC: Now that is a showstopper! No wonder so many people fell in love with the piece. You have an eye for treasures. We love saving and working on antique treasures too. We think it is extremely important to preserve our architectural and cultural heritage. Does Captiva Home provide additional services? What about clients who lean more towards DIY?

KJ: Along with offering custom furniture painting services, we also offer training and coaching to teach YOU how to paint furniture! As with any painting project, remember that while it may not be fun, the prep work is essential to completing a successful project. Most of the issues we try to help folks resolve could have been avoided if they took the time to ensure the surface is clean, sanded and stable before painting.
