A Conversation with Hammond Design

LPC: Can you tell us about a project where you helped transform a cluttered space (visually or physically), into a more relaxing or purposeful one?

HD: We recently worked with clients who desired to update their dated, boring kitchen into a sophisticated, organized space. Our clients are a large family of six, so the kitchen would easily overflow with mil, homework, cell phones, computers and other belongings. Also, there was inadequate space for more than one cook in the kitchen.

We decided to start with a plan for the space that would allow several people to gather in the kitchen and prepare a meal at the same time. We extended the kitchen island to for more seating and prep space. To decrease the clutter even more, we installed a pantry off the kitchen area. The pantry was organized by a professional and will be used for bulk food and beverage storage.

Our clients are also avid cooks, and it was important to them to have top of the line appliances. We added cooking precision and functionality to the new kitchen by installing a 48″ dual fuel Wolf Range with steam oven and warming drawer. For their refrigeration needs, we installed a Sub Zero refrigerator and a beverage refrigerator. A separate bar sink with filtered water added even more prep space to the renovated kitchen.

LPC: That kitchen sounds like a dream with no detail spared or ignored. How does detail play a role in your approach to interior design?

HD: Detail is extremely important in our designs. Detail is often the focal point or “wow factor” of a room. We will often design a space to bring out the best in existing detail such as mouldings, beautiful floors, stained glass windows or a great view! If there is no existing detail to spotlight, we will often add it it to the space. This new detail could be in the form of a distinctively wallpapered feature wall, a unique custom cabinet, or even a piece of art.

LPC: How do you use design to bring attention to that detail in a space?

HD: We always make sure that all of the coordinating aspects of the design-furniture, rugs, pillows, paint colors, etc. complement the detail without overwhelming it.

LPC: What aspect of your design process do you think your clients enjoy?

HD: Our clients appreciate the time and attention we give to their tastes and lifestyle needs. We help them navigate the often overwhelming process of a remodel or redesign so that they can carry on with their regular lives and meet their everyday obligations to family, work and personal time. When the project is complete, they have a home they are excited to share with family and friends.

LPC: It was been a pleasure and privilege to take a peek into your process. Thank you so much for taking the time to sit down with us.

HD: Our pleasure, you’re welcome.
