No-Fail Exterior Colors

Exterior painting can be tricky. Picking exterior colors is the source of much anxiety. Many clients are daunted by the scope of the exterior projects, and with good reason. Exteriors are the first thing people see when looking at a home or building. A paint job for exteriors has to last for years. Choosing the wrong color or the wrong type of paint is a long-term mistake. No one wants to be caught with an ill-fitting color for such a long time or go through the expense and trouble of repainting. At Larkin Painting, we often work with designers that help our clients choose color palettes for their homes. If you aren’t working with a designer, we are more than happy to use our color expertise to help you choose the perfect hues for your home. You can start your journey with us here. We will explore a few sure-fire color pairings that will transform your home’s exterior.

First, let’s explore color combinations with bold door colors. The first color combination features colors from one of our favorite paint manufacturers, Benjamin Moore. This combo features Brilliant White for the siding, Hale Navy for the trim, and a luscious yellow, Marblehead Gold, for the door (click the links to see these colors “in action”). The siding and trim colors are more traditional and historical feeling colors, but the pop of yellow on the door adds a bold and cheerful touch. If you prefer a darker hue for your siding, try Iron Mountain from Benjamin Moore. White Dove provides a nice lighter-hued contrast on the trim. For an exciting door color, Tahitian Breeze from Behr is a gorgeous surprise. The final combination features three colors from Sherwin Williams. Pure White is a beautifully neutral and bright color for the siding. For the trim, Tricorn Black provides a crisp and sophisticated contrast. Derbyshire, a full-bodied green, is a perfect bold and welcoming color.

If you prefer a neutral color scheme, these three color combinations will work beautifully. Farrow & Ball, another favorite manufacturer of ours, has two featured colors in this first combination. For the siding, Hardwick White, a beigey-white, provides a calm canvas for the siding. Farrow & Ball’s, Clunch, which resembles heavy cream works seamlessly for the siding. The door features Squirrel Tail, a neutral color from Benjamin Moore. This color does resemble the brown and grey of your typical friendly squirrel’s tail. The trim and siding colors can also be swapped if you want a lighter-hued exterior. Blue is a popular color for doors. This second exterior combination features Seaworthy, a dark blue, from Sherwin Williams. Canvas Tan is a rich tan color that is perfect for your siding, while Westhighland White makes the trim pop. All colors are from Sherwin Williams. Again, if you want the siding to be lighter, you can switch out the siding and trim colors. The final trio combines Sheep’s Wool from Benjamin Moore for the siding, with Farrow & Ball’s Mole’s Breath (a misty gray) for the trim. Black doors are a classic and sophisticated design choice. Pitch Black from Farrow & Ball is a beautiful highlight for this combination.
